What the Proofpoint acquisition means for the email space

You may have heard the news yesterday that Proofpoint is set to acquire Hornetsecurity, marking a significant consolidation within the email security industry. This follows Hornetsecurity's earlier acquisition of Vade, forming a chain of acquisitions that will now be absorbed into a single, US-headquarted entity. While such mergers can bring about expanded services, they also raise concerns - especially for European businesses and the broader email security ecosystem.

Implications - the Halon take

The integration of Hornetsecurity and Vade into Proofpoint's portfolio is positioned to enhance offerings for Microsoft 365 users, with a particular emphasis on serving small and mid-sized businesses through managed service providers. On paper, it’s a step towards creating a comprehensive, bundled solution.

But for businesses - especially in Europe - this consolidation brings several concerns. Combining distinct platforms often results in more rigid, standardized solutions that may not align with the unique needs of every business. It also increases the risk of vendor lock-in, making it challenging to switch providers without significant overhauls. There’s also the possibility of a shift in product priorities, as features central to Hornetsecurity or Vade may be deprioritized under Proofpoint’s broader roadmap.

Beyond operational impacts, this consolidation reduces much needed competition in the email security space. Fewer independent players means fewer distinct product options, slower innovation and ultimately, fewer choices for businesses looking for a tailored fit. Additionally, for European businesses, there is the added complexity of data sovereignty. With both Hornetsecurity and Vade now under the wing of a US company, questions around data jurisdiction, compliance with EU regulations like the GDPR, and long-term alignment with European privacy standards become more pressing.

Taking a different approach to email security

As the email security landscape continues to consolidate, some organizations may start reevaluating what matters most in a long-term partner. For some, the answer lies in working with providers that offer flexibility, innovation, and a deep understanding of the European regulatory and technical landscape.

Halon was built with these values in mind. Our solutions enable composable email infrastructure that can be shaped around evolving needs - not forced into a one-size-fits-all model. As an independent, Europe-headquartered company, we remain closely aligned with regional compliance requirements and are free to innovate in ways that serve our customers.

And with a focused roadmap, we remain dynamic, continuously refining our platform to meet the demands of modern email operations, free from the challenges that often accompany large-scale integrations.
For businesses navigating these shifts, alternative platforms that emphasize adaptability and a focused development path may offer a more tailored fit, depending on specific needs and long-term strategy.
